The thing about the future
The thing about the future is that it might not be that bad - or, it might be so bad that nothing we do will make much difference.
But what about the present?
How are we living, right now? Is it loving and life-affirming?
This seems like a more helpful question for my mind and heart right now. I was so moved by Nina and Helena Gualinga at the Bioneers Conference, and brought back down hard to the reality that our current society relies on methods that are NOT OK, RIGHT NOW - even if we don't think at all about our impact on future beings.
I can't rationalize filling my gas tank as "only .000001 (or whatever) of global carbon output." Not when I'm awake to what the actual substance is that I'm filling my gas tank with, and what it took to take it from the ground and get it to my car.
Who was killed, what was destroyed, who's being injured, what is continually in jeopardy.
This was originally a reel on Instagram, which only allowed 60 seconds, so here's a couple more thoughts:
1. I still care about the future beings, and being a good ancestor. I'm not throwing that away. But I notice that the things we are doing to jeopardize future human and other-than-human life on this planet are all also not okay, right now.
2. Every spiritual and wisdom tradition plus modern physics tell us that we're interconnected, and that the intention - the vibration - with which we do things matters, and lasts beyond us. So, maybe what matters MOST is being loving, now. How would the goal of being loving and life-affirming guide me to act? How would it guide you?
