I’m Not Sorry You Didn’t Shave Before Acupuncture

I've given thousands of acupuncture treatments, and it's gotta be more than 100 times a woman has warned me, “I'm sorry, I didn't shave."

When someone says sorry to me for this, I feel like it's her who is owed an apology. An apology from everyone who ever told her that her body's hair was something to be ashamed of – something she had to tend to, lest other people be disturbed.

It's your body! If you like how your legs looked shaved, or someone you love likes it and you feel like doing it for them, then I fully support you shaving and enjoying it. But if I were unsettled (or judgmental) about a little stubble on your legs, I am quite sure that would be MY problem, not yours.

In my humble opinion, nothing about your miraculous body doing what a body does EVER needs an apology. Your body is phenomenally good at living, at being itself, at making more of itself out of the nourishment you take in, at healing and repairing and growing and adapting. Let it live, and let it be loved.
